How much is enough to stop working?
The 4% rule comes from research showing that withdrawing 4% of your retirement assets each year has been likely to last 30 years or more. That is why 25 times your annual living expenses becomes the target.

Living expenses in retirement
Enter monthly living expenses in today's money and your expected National Pension payment. Future amounts are calculated using the inflation rate.
Check the asset path
See a chart of your assets growing before retirement and shrinking after it, up to age 100.
Calculations use the real return (1 + return) / (1 + inflation) − 1 and are expressed in present value. We assume the remaining assets keep earning the same return after retirement, and once pension payments begin, your withdrawals are reduced by the pension amount. Taxes and health insurance premiums are not included.
FAQ
Does the 4% rule apply in Korea too?
The 4% rule is a rule of thumb derived from historical US stock and bond data. If your retirement will last 40 years or more, or returns are low, it is safer to use a more conservative withdrawal rate such as 3 to 3.5%.
How is the National Pension reflected?
From the age pension payments start, only the living expenses minus the pension amount are withdrawn from your assets. You can check your expected payment on the National Pension Service's "Find out my pension" page.
The result is too far away.
You can increase your monthly savings, reduce your living expenses in retirement, or add part-time income for the first few years of retirement (Side FIRE). Try changing the numbers and compare.
