    May comprehensive income tax

Start by checking your tax base bracket

Comprehensive income tax is a progressive tax that combines several incomes, subtracts deductions, and applies a different rate to each bracket. Even the same KRW 1 million is taxed differently depending on which bracket it is added to.

    1. Enter income amounts

Enter your employment, business, pension and other income amounts. These are revenue minus necessary expenses or the employment income deduction.

    2. Enter deductions

Enter the number of basic deduction persons, other income deductions and the total tax credits.

    3. Check additional payment or refund

Enter the tax you have already paid and it estimates whether you will owe more in May or get a refund.

    How it is calculated

    • Total income amount − income deductions (KRW 1.5 million per basic deduction person + other income deductions) = tax base
    • Tax base × tax rate − progressive deduction = calculated tax. There are 8 rate brackets from 6% to 45%.
    • Calculated tax − tax credits and reductions = determined tax, to which a 10% local income tax is added.
    • Subtracting the tax already paid from the determined tax gives the additional payment (or refund).
    • Financial income is reflected using a simplified method that adds only the portion above KRW 20 million per year. Comparative taxation, dividend gross-up, separately taxed income and penalty taxes are not reflected. For an accurate filing, rely on the Hometax simulated calculation and return.

    FAQ

Where can I find my earned income amount?

It is shown as 'earned income amount' on the earned income withholding receipt you get from your employer. It equals total salary minus the earned income deduction.

I paid the 3.3% freelancer withholding. Can I get a refund?

Of the 3.3%, 3% is income tax and 0.3% is local income tax. If you paid more than your actual determined tax, you get a refund by filing in May. For taxes already paid, enter only the income tax portion (3%).

What is the difference between the marginal tax rate and the effective tax rate?

The marginal tax rate is the rate applied to each additional bit of income. The effective tax rate is the tax actually paid as a share of your total tax base, so it is lower than the marginal rate.

If my financial income is KRW 20 million or less, do I not need to file?

If interest and dividends are KRW 20 million or less per year, tax is settled by withholding and the income is not added to your comprehensive income. If you have other comprehensive income, that income must still be reported.

Why does the result differ from Hometax?

This calculator is a rough estimate that reflects only the main items. The actual tax may differ depending on detailed rules such as deduction limits, reductions, alternative taxation, and penalty taxes.

Results are estimates based on your inputs and simplified assumptions, and are for reference only, not a basis for investment decisions.
