    How to use

How to use the FX converter

    1. Choose a direction and currency

Choose whether to see how much a foreign currency is worth in won, or how much foreign currency you can buy with won, then select the currency.

    2. Enter the spread and discount

The spread is the gap between the base rate and the cash buying and selling rates you see in your bank app. If you have an exchange discount coupon, enter the discount rate.

    3. Compare the rate table

Compare the base rate, cash buy and sell rates, wire sending and receiving rates, and the real cost at a glance.

Why there are several exchange rates

The rate you see in the news is the base rate, the benchmark for interbank trading. When you actually buy or sell foreign currency at a bank, a spread, which works like a bank fee, is added to it. Cash carries storage and transport costs, so its spread is the largest, while wire transfers to an account have a smaller one.

    Cash buy rate = base rate × (1 + spread × (1 − discount rate)) | Cash sell rate = base rate × (1 − spread × (1 − discount rate))

The wire transfer rate uses roughly half the cash spread as an example. The default spread for each currency is an example value based on levels commonly applied by Korean banks, and actual spreads vary by bank, branch and time. For overseas stock exchange costs, see the broker fee comparison, which lists them by broker.

    Data

The USD/KRW base rate uses the site's market data (updated 3 times a day). For other currencies, won rates are calculated from rates against the dollar from a public exchange rate API (open.er-api.com); if they cannot be loaded, values as of Oct 9, 2026 are used. These are not real-time rates, so check the bank's posted rate before an actual transaction.

    FAQ

Can't I exchange money at the base rate?

At bank counters and in apps, you trade at the base rate plus a spread. The higher the discount, such as a 90% exchange rate discount, the closer you get to the base rate.

Why is the yen quoted per 100 yen?

The rate per 1 yen is very small, so Korean banks and media quote the won price per 100 yen. The Vietnamese dong is shown per 100 dong for the same reason.

Why are the cash and wire transfer rates different?

Cash has a larger spread because banks bear the cost of storing and transporting foreign banknotes. Account-to-account wire transfers and foreign currency deposit transfers do not have this cost, so their rates are closer to the base rate.

How much does currency exchange cost when investing in overseas stocks?

Brokers usually add a spread of around 1% to the base rate and then apply a discount. You can check each broker's discount conditions in the broker fee comparison.

How do I calculate currency gains?
