    How to use

Where did your US stock profit come from?

Your return in won mixes stock price gains with exchange rate moves. Separating the two lets you tell real investment performance from currency luck.

    1. Enter dollar prices

Enter the purchase price, current price and quantity in dollars.

    2. Enter exchange rates

Enter the exchange rate at the time of purchase and the current rate. The current rate is filled in automatically from the latest data.

    3. Include costs

It includes commissions and currency exchange costs to calculate the won profit you actually take home.

    How the breakdown works

Stock price effect = (current price − purchase price) × quantity × purchase exchange rate Currency effect = current price × quantity × (current exchange rate − purchase exchange rate)

Subtract trading commissions and exchange costs from the sum of the two effects to get your net profit or loss in won. For capital gains tax (22% after a KRW 2.5 million deduction), use the Overseas Stock Capital Gains Tax Simulator. The capital gain is converted into won using the exchange rates on the settlement dates of the purchase and the sale.

    FAQ

    Are currency gains taxed too?

Capital gains on overseas stocks are calculated by subtracting the acquisition cost in won from the sale amount converted into won, so gains caused by a rising exchange rate are also included in the capital gain.

If I keep holding dollars, do I save on exchange costs?

Yes. If you reinvest in dollars after selling instead of converting back to won, you pay the exchange cost only once. However, the value in won keeps changing with the exchange rate.

What date is the current exchange rate from?

The USD/KRW rate at the most recent market close in the site's market data is filled in automatically. It may differ from the actual rate your broker uses for exchange.
