KRW 20 million and KRW 10 million

As dividends grow, watch two lines

If interest and dividend financial income exceeds KRW 20 million a year, it is added to other income and taxed at progressive rates. For health insurance, the moment it exceeds KRW 10 million, the entire financial income counts as income.

    1. Enter financial income

Enter interest, domestic dividends, ETF distributions and overseas dividends on a pre-tax basis.

    2. Enter other income

If you enter the tax base of employment and business income, it estimates the additional tax you would owe under comprehensive taxation.

    3. Check the health insurance impact

Check whether you lose dependent status, the income-based premium for employee subscribers, and the change in premiums for regional subscribers.

    How it is calculated

    • Financial income of KRW 20 million or less: 15.4% (14% national tax + 1.4% local tax) withholding and the matter ends with separate taxation.
    • Over KRW 20 million: up to KRW 20 million is taxed at 14%, the excess is added to other comprehensive income and taxed at progressive rates (6–45%), and the higher amount compared with 14% separate taxation of the whole is charged (comparative taxation).
    • For the portion of domestic dividends above KRW 20 million, a gross-up (add-on) is applied and then the dividend tax credit is received. For overseas dividends, tax paid locally is reflected as the foreign tax credit.
    • Dividends and distributions earned inside an ISA or pension account are not subject to the comprehensive taxation of financial income.

    FAQ

Is exceeding KRW 20 million a tax bomb?

Only the portion above KRW 20 million is added to other income. If your other income is small and you are in a low tax bracket, there may be almost no additional tax. Conversely, high earners face high rates on the excess.

Do dependents lose their status if they exceed it by even KRW 1?

If financial income exceeds KRW 10 million a year, the entire amount counts as income. If your annual combined income including it exceeds KRW 20 million, you lose dependent status. If you are near the threshold, consider adjusting the timing of dividend payments or the account.

Are US stock dividends included too?

Yes. Overseas dividends are included in financial income too. Tax paid locally is reflected as the foreign tax credit when you file your comprehensive income tax return.

Is separate taxation of high-dividend company dividends reflected?

From dividends paid in 2026–2028, dividends from qualifying high-dividend companies can be taxed separately (14–30%) at your election when filing. This calculator uses ordinary taxation; see the explanation of the scheme below.
